“Curving the Line” with Sheena Norquay 5th November 2015
I love patchwork but I am not so keen on the quilting bit which is why most of my quilting is straight line, usually “in the ditch”. This workshop showed how to draft curved quilting patterns that can be completed using both the walking foot and free machine quilting.
Sheena explained that gentle shallow curves can be quilted using a walking foot, but that the walking foot couldn’t be used for deeper, steeper curves. She then showed us how to draft a gentle S curve using tracing or greaseproof paper (which is bigger and cheaper). This curve was traced on to a light coloured fabric on which we could quilt. The quilting could be an ordinary stitch or some of the decorative stitches that many sewing machines now have. Other quilting techniques included using twin needle, cording, braiding, and satin stitch using a variety of threads.
In the afternoon Sheena taught us how to draft a C curve, which is shorter and deeper than the S curve and how this simple curve can be used to make many, varied patterns. These patterns can be used on borders, on the main quilt or can be used on a whole cloth. However, these patterns need to be free machine quilted.
The samplers that Sheena brought with her to show the many patterns that can be created, and also demonstrated that by moving the curves closer together or smaller, you can introduce perspective into landscape quilts.
One of the best things to come from this workshop was to explain how to create a quilting pattern to exactly fit a particular quilt without having to buy commercial stencils. This alone could save quilters a small fortune.
This workshop has given me confidence to use curves on my quilts as I now know how to make a stencil for my quilt top. Thank you Sheena for a truly inspirational workshop.
